Understand your roof
Tear-off: down to the wood
Ask your roofer
- Are you removing every layer down to the wood?
- How many layers do I have now, and is that in the quote?
Ask them to put the answer in writing.
Why it matters
Shingles laid over an old roof hide soft wood, add weight, and usually wear out sooner.
How it should be built
Tap Next on the drawing to see it go together, layer by layer.
- Every old layer comes off, down to the wood.
- The bare deck is inspected before anything new goes on.
- Old nails are pulled or set flush so the new roof lies flat.
