Ask them to put the answer in writing.
Why it matters
Shingling around a cupola without lifting it leaves old flashing and weak spots at its base.
How it should be built

- The cupola is lifted off in one piece.
- The old ridge vent comes off.
- Ice & water and new shingles go on underneath, then a new ridge vent.
- New flashing goes around the base when it’s set back.
