Understand your roof

Attic ventilation: in low, out high

Ask your roofer

  • How much intake and exhaust do I have now, and what will it be after?
  • Are my soffit vents actually open?

Ask them to put the answer in writing.

Why it matters

Hot, wet air trapped in the attic cooks shingles from below, causes ice dams and can void a shingle warranty.

How it should be built

Tap Next on the drawing to see it go together, layer by layer.

  • Fresh air comes in low at the soffits, with baffles keeping insulation out of the way.
  • Hot air leaves high, through one type of exhaust only.
  • Intake and exhaust are measured and balanced for your attic.
